It's past time for the silent majority to stand up against racist attacks

The Workers Party utterly condemns condemned the latest racist attack in Fountain Street in the City Centre. The racist graffiti painted on the house where an African family live who come from Zimbabwe had anti Muslim and anti HMO’s slogans despite the family being Christian and despite the fact that the building is a family home and not a HMO. But we cannot expect the people who did this to care much about facts. This criminal and intimidating behaviour clearly highlights the mentality of those who see a family with a different skin colour and apply their own racial and religious hate-filled narratives.
These racists criminals sprayed Red Hand Defenders on the front door of the house. The Workers Party last week condemned the sectarian attacks in the city, flagging up our concerns that the twin evils of sectarianism and racism are increasing and young people are being encouraged by bad faith actors to commit these vile criminal activities.
It is now time for the hate crime legislation to be introduced there can be no justification for delaying it, all manner of hate crimes is on the rise including violence against women and girls. We need the Stormont Executive and the Justice Minister to not only condemn these vile acts as they happen, but to introduce the necessary legislation that could help in the fight against all the forms of bigotry and intolerance that is growing exponentially with the rise of right-wing groups from across the world. It is time to stop the hateful rhetoric and action of these groups, and it is time for our politicians to stop excusing hate speech as free speech. The vast majority of the people across Northern Ireland want to live their lives in peace with their neighbours regardless of their religion, ethnicity, or colour. It is time for the silent majority to stand against this hatred and tell those who spread false narratives to stir up racial and sectarian tensions they are not welcome in our communities, towns, or cities.
