Workers Party CEC member, Lily Kerr joined the picket line in Enniskillen today in support of the workers employed by Pilgrim food, a multi million-pound employer. Staff are being paid slightly over the minimum wage and are having to work overtime to bring home a wage that does not cover the basic needs of their families. These workers do not want to be on strike; they have been forced to take this action to receive a fair pay settlement.

The company makes millions in profits yet will not pay their workforce a real living wage. The Workers Party attended the picket line to show our solidarity to the workers and to offer practical support. The workers are on their sixth week of strike action, and they deserve our support and the support of their communities. All to often these companies who make massive profits on the backs of their employees refuse to pay decent wages and terms and conditions of employment. They believe they have the right under the capitalist system to exploit workers and their families by making them work excessive hours of overtime to try and make ends meet.

More workers are joining trade unions and fighting for fair wages and conditions of employment and they have the support of the Workers Party and many others. The mood on the picket line today was one of determination and solidarity: nothing will break their spirits and we salute them for taking this courageous stand for a fair living wage. This strike will empower other workers across the country to fight for better wages and an end to exploitation by large corporations.
