Man assaulted in Racially Motivated Attack in Strabane

by Hugh Scullion, Mid Ulster Workers Party representative. 19th November 2025

It is despicable that a man delivering leaflets on Saturday in Strabane was verbally and physically assaulted. That the perpetrator stopped his car to deliberately attacked a man going about his business speaks volumes for how racism is taking hold across all of our communities and areas in Northern Ireland.

What insane level of hatred prompted this vile person to commit theft and assault in what is the very definition of a hate crime?

The Workers Party calls on all of our politicians, civic, church and community organisations to condemn this without reservation.

Most people And groups will condemn this attack, but we must be clear that some will choose not to, either because they don’t care or because they share the hate that this individual displayed.

The level of hatred that is being directed against ethnic minorities has become rampant across the Island of Ireland. These extreme right-wing groups have shown they are willing to inflict severe harm on those who have a different skin colour, religion, or a different identity from them. We must all show our disgust and contempt for these views and actions.

The Workers Party has attended and spoken at many events opposing these racists and will continue to do so. But it is now time for our political leadership to call out those racist groupings within their communities. They must do so while stressing there can be no justification or excuses for those who espouse fascist views and ferment and spread lies and misinformation in order to demonise migrants and refugees that leads to these violent physical and verbal attacks.
