Urgent Call for Enhanced Security at Former Public Buildings Following Downpatrick Arson

Workers Party Representative Colm Mullan is demanding that authorities implement mandatory security obligations for property developers who purchase former public buildings.

This call for action follows a severe malicious fire this week at the former social security offices in Mount Crescent, Downpatrick. Witnesses reported seeing two young men fleeing the premises moments before the structure ignited, prompting Mr. Mullan to express his hope that those responsible for such dangerous and senseless actions are swiftly caught and prosecuted.

The responsibility for preventing these incidents lies not only with law enforcement but also with the property owners and local government.

Mr. Mullan highlights a troubling lack of oversight, noting that this specific building was targeted by another arson attack just three weeks ago.

Despite that previous incident, the owner failed to implement any visible security measures or deterrents. The Workers Party is now formally calling on the council to take immediate, proactive steps to compel developers to secure their sites effectively.

The escalating frequency of these attacks suggests that those responsible have become emboldened by a lack of intervention. Mr. Mullan emphasises that the police and relevant agencies must collaborate closely with community leaders in the Bridge Street and Mount Crescent areas to halt this behaviour, which has become a persistent menace to local residents.

Property developers owe a fundamental duty of care to the communities where they operate, and ensuring that vacant buildings are properly maintained and secured is a critical public safety issue that requires an immediate response.
