The Workers Party of Ireland sends warm greetings to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on the occasion of its 24th congress.

Background to the Communist Party of India (Marxist)

The communist movement in India is more than a century old. In the words of the Tricontinental Institute, “this was a century of sacrifices by hundreds of thousands of revolutionaries of the Indian communist movement who pledged their lives to the dream of an egalitarian and a truly democratic society. Thousands of cadre were martyred on this path and many more continue to carry forward the dream and the fight in the face of state repression, violence, and infinite efforts at subversion.”

Over the past 105 years Indian communists have fought sectarian religious strife and caste discrimination, “mobilised workers and peasants to fight to advance their rights, and worked to change the consciousness of the people in a progressive direction in order to make society more liveable for all marginalised, exploited, and oppressed sections of people”.

Among the various communist parties and groups in India, the largest in terms of both membership and electoral representation, is the Communist Party India (Marxist) – CPI(M), which was founded after an ideological split from the Communist Party of India in 1964.

In alliance with Communist Party of India and several smaller parties, CPI(M) currently leads the state government in the state of Kerala, and the party has elected members in 9 state legislative assemblies throughout the country.

The All-India Party Congress is the supreme authority of the CPI(M) and between congresses, the Central Committee is the highest decision-making body. At its 24th Congress, held between April 2nd and 6th the CPI(M) elected an 85-member Central Committee, which in turn elected an 18 member Polit Bureau and a new General Secretary Comrade M. A. Baby from Kerala, who replaced Comrade Sitaram Yechury (1952-2024).

Through regular International Meetings of Communist and Workers Parties, the Workers Party has had a long and positive relationship with the CPI(M). On behalf of the Central Executive Committee, Ted Tynan, Party President and Gerry Grainger, International Secretary sent the following message of solidarity to the CPI(M) Congress.

GREETINGS FROM THE WORKERS PARTY OF IRELAND TO THE COMMUNIST PARTY OF INDIA (MARXIST) ON THE OCCASION OF ITS 24th CONGRESS

Dear comrades,

The Workers Party of Ireland sends warm comradely greetings to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and extends its best wishes and solidarity to the CPI(M) on the occasion of its 24th Congress being held on 2nd- 6th April 2025, at Madurai, Tamilnadu, India.

The CPI(M) has a long history of struggle under difficult conditions. Throughout its history the CPI(M) has consistently struggled for the class interests of the working people.

At the present time the working class across the world is facing one of the worst cost-of-living crises in recent memory, one that will have long term and very serious implications for health and wellbeing. Rapidly rising prices for food, fuel, housing, education and other essentials are devastating working-class living conditions, making it increasingly impossible for millions of people to make ends meet. Every aspect of life is severely affected. This is not accidental. It is a consequence of the capitalist system.

The endless stream of war crimes, atrocities, and human rights violations committed by Israel with the unwavering moral, political, military, financial and logistical support of the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union and other imperialist powers has vividly reminded the world of the true nature of imperialism and the barbarism it engenders.

Further, Israel’s genocidal, aggressive and expansionist policies which in addition to its murderous attacks in Palestine and Lebanon now involve intervention in Syria and further poses a major threat to the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of Syria.

The world faces a serious danger of a more generalized military confrontation given the increasing aggressiveness of imperialism. The sustained development of militarism and increased military capabilities, the maintenance of massive armed forces and powerful armament industries, the creation of military academies training the elite of client states, the establishment and expansion of permanent military bases across the world, are all features of imperialist aggression which threaten the world. The struggle against the development and use of weapons of mass destruction remains a vital demand in the struggle for world peace.

The working class, whose labour power is the source of all wealth in society, must take control of the system of production and resources, to create a new social order to meet the needs of all.

The Workers Party of Ireland salutes the militants and supporters of the CPI(M). We wish you success in the work of your Congress and the development of your programme of work. We are confident that the outcome of the Congress will strengthen and consolidate your Party and its organisations and advance the struggle for democratic and workers’ rights, for the overthrow of capitalism and the construction of the new socialist-communist society.

Long live proletarian solidarity!

Long live Marxism-Leninism!

For Workers’ Power and Socialism!

With communist greetings,

Ted Tynan, President

Gerry Grainger, International Secretary
