“"The Workers Party has long advocated for increased public transport to reduce our carbon footprint, but this type of behaviour from Translink completely undermines public confidence. People need to know they can rely on the services they pay for."

Nicola Grant, Workers Party Representative for Newry and Armagh, has called on Translink to provide an urgent guarantee that all passengers holding valid tickets will receive the service they have paid for.
This demand follows a serious incident on 20th June, when 30 passengers—some of whom had purchased tickets only twenty minutes prior—were left stranded after being denied boarding on the final bus from Belfast to Newry due to overcrowding.
Grant described the situation as "intolerable," noting that no assistance or alternative travel arrangements were offered to passengers who had purchased tickets in good faith.
"This was a frightening experience for those left behind," said Grant. "To be told by staff that the only solution was to 'club together' and hire taxis—when most passengers were complete strangers—is an outrageous suggestion. Many were told to leave the station with no other options provided. This left people in a desperate situation; some were forced to pay for unexpected hotel accommodation, while others could not afford to do so and were left terrified, unsure of how they would reach home."
Grant is demanding accountability from Translink, questioning why the company continued to sell tickets when it was already aware that bus capacity had been reached.
"Having sold these tickets, the company had a clear responsibility to ensure these passengers reached their destinations and to cover any costs incurred by their failure to provide the service," she stated. "The Workers Party has long advocated for increased public transport to reduce our carbon footprint, but this type of behaviour from Translink completely undermines public confidence. People need to know they can rely on the services they pay for."
Grant has called on the Minister to demand a full explanation from Translink as to how this failure was allowed to occur. She further insists that the affected passengers must be compensated for the ordeal of being stranded forty miles from home late at night.
"Translink has a duty to stop overselling tickets for services they cannot provide," Grant concluded. "Many of those stranded were young women and girls, a demographic already vulnerable to physical and verbal violence in our society. Leaving them in such a position is a gross dereliction of duty
