Workers Party Derry representative, Peter McGuire, has called the anti-social behaviour of a minority of residents in a new housing development at Faustina Terrace and Templemore Crescent "scandalous".

Mr McGuire said: "It is outrageous given the housing crisis we are in, that a small minority of tenants are causing such stress and harassment in this brand-new complex in Faustina Terrace and Templemore Crescent.

"Residents are saying their lives are being made unbearable in the newest housing development in the City."

Described as one of the largest high quality affordable housing developments, it contains 98 homes including units for the over 55s, with wheelchair access. Residents are reporting very serious criminal behaviour which, Mr McGuire says, is making them live in a state of fear and constant anxiety.

He said: "Residents have reported a number of incidents and 24-hour partying and state a number of residents have already left the estate because they could no longer cope with the situation.

"The police are in the estate continuously, and taxis refuse to pick up passengers travelling to and from there. People should not have to live like this. They have the right to enjoy their new homes, and many may have been on the waiting list for a home for a very long time.

"The Workers Party have been involved in campaigning for the building of good quality public housing for decades and it is outrageous that a minority of tenants are bringing the estate into disrepute and creating fear and intimidation in the neighbourhood by their selfish and criminal activity.

"This situation cannot be allowed to prevail action needs to be taken now for the safety and wellbeing of all those residents who just want to live in peace and enjoy their new homes."
