The Workers Party marched in solidarity at the Newry Pride parade, with members from the LGBTQ+ community, the Women's Committee, the Youth Wing, and various branches all participating.
Nicola Grant, the party's regional spokesperson, said she was proud of everyone who attended. Despite the damp weather and torrential rain, spirits weren't dampened.
She noted that the atmosphere of solidarity remained strong, with political parties, trade unions, and community organisations joining the parade, and people cheering from shops and pubs along the route.
Grant said it was "wonderful to see Newry Pride on our streets again," and affirmed that the Workers Party will "always stand shoulder to shoulder with the LGBTQ+ community in their struggle against all forms of discrimination, as we have done for decades."
She stated that for the party, Pride is a chance to not only show solidarity but also to protest against those who seek to "capitalise, profit, and exploit" the LGBTQ+ community.
"Identity is used under the capitalist system to divide; socialism seeks to unite us," she said, adding that "Gay Rights are Human Rights."
The statement concluded with a thank you to Newry Pride for a "wet but wonderful day" and a promise to march again next year.
